sofa.com
On paper, sofa.com was a dreadful idea. Back in 2005, when Pat Reeves and Rohan Blacker gave a man in a New York bar £215,000 for the domain name (yes, really), people simply didn’t buy sofas online. What if it felt like a bag of spanners to sit on? It was just too risky.
The genius bit was that sofa.com would take on all the risk, rather than the customer. “Don’t like it? We’ll come collect it. No quibbles.” It’s a bedrock of internet shopping these days, but at the time it was unheard of – certainly with big things like sofas.
I wrote all sorts for the brand in the eight years or so I worked with them while at big fish®: ads, point of sale stuff, brochures, web copy. I even helped write the information memorandum (the big book used to pitch the business to potential buyers). They got £50 million for it in the end, which wasn’t bad.
